Transcript: Passion For PAWS Foundation

Hi, my name is Capulet and I am the founder of the Passion for PAWS Foundation.

I started this foundation because of my passion for dogs and their health. Over the past few years, I began to take an active role in learning more information about canine health. It all started with my beloved Zorro. Towards the last few years of his life, his health began to decline.

I wanted to be a pro-active pet owner. I began to research information and talk to professionals in the animal health field. That is when I noticed that canine health research is not as advanced and developed compared to human health.

We need to continue to improve canine health studies and research. Our pets deserve the best health care. They are our best friends and we want them happy and healthy.

That is why the Passion for PAWS Foundation is committed to raising canine health awareness to pet owners.

To support our cause, we will hold an annual dog walk to raise money for canine health once a year. The event will be held on the first Saturday in May. The annual dog walk will take place in any town, city or neighborhood that is interested in participating.
Pet owners can either walk their dog(s) for 30 minutes or participate by bringing their dog(s) to a local dog park and have them play for 30 minutes
The fundraiser will help raise money for canine health research. The research will be conducted with the highest scientific methods and standards. It will focus on all health related issues, including diseases and illnesses.
What we need from you is your financial support to get the program started.
We have created a blog site called passionforpawss.blogspot.com. This is a place for pet owners to learn more information about canine health awareness.
In addition to the website, we have created a smart phone application where users can research health information, compare dog food products, view nutrition facts and recipe ideas. The application will also have an option to link their account to their vet’s pet profile. This will enable users to view their pet’s medical history anytime and anywhere. This application will be available to connect through social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook. Passion for PAWS can also be found on Facebook, Google +, and Twitter. The Passion for PAWS Foundation is currently being promoted through social media and we hope to expand our brand.
Here is where you can help. We need assistance with promotional items. We would like to sell promotional items such as clothing apparel for pet owners and canines. This would include T-shirts, hats, dog collars, leashes and canine t-shirts. Charging money for the apparel will help assist with an alternative way for donation support, while promoting the cause.

In addition to the apparel, we would also like to generate free informational promotional items. We would like to print brochures, posters and newsletters to leave in veterinarian offices and pet stores. The printed material will inform pet owners about canine health awareness and more information about the Passion for PAWS Foundation.
Please support our mission! It is a fun and a great way to help raise money and bring awareness to canine health and research!
Thank you.

  1. This comment is for your transcript and your video...

You did a great job convincing me to support your cause for PAWS and buy your product. I could really hear the emotion and passion for your subject and that is only shown through great writing.

    Great Job!

  2. Your transcript is very well written. It tells the reader what the cause is for and how you plan on promoting the cause. I think after reading your transcript it will motivate others to want to make a contribution towards the program.

    Good Job!

Kudos for pivoting. I thought your etiquette writing was improving, but only you know how you feel about the work. If you were losing steam, then it is a good time to change. You still learned a lot in the first half of the semester, and recognizing that every plan is a draft that you can rewrite will be an asset down the road.

Before we move on, I want to mention that the piece you wrote on the father shooting the laptop arrived at a smart thesis: that he became as guilty and obnoxious as his tweeting daughter by posting the video.

I also liked your piece on technology and relationships. It was well structured and thought out.

Much of your etiquette writing seemed down on technology however. Technology is only making us rude and disconnected? Do you really feel that way as an interactive communications student? I feel texts and devices keep me closer to my friends and family when we are apart and I make a conscious effort to put down the devices when I’m with people in person.

I am pleased that you chose something positive though, your love for animals, over something that seemed solely critical. Positive ideas make writing a proposal easier. It is easier to encourage our better selves than it is to restrict other’s demons.

Passion for PAWS is a good name. The capitalization of PAWS makes me wonder if it is an acronym. Passion for Animals Walking Society?

You did a good job on your midterm. I appreciate the credibility rewrite of your bio. I though this alone was very good:

Animals always surrounded me when I was growing up. I had two cats, three dogs, countless fish and one chicken. My Grandparents owned dogs and horses. They even owned twelve dogs at once. I used to live next to a horse farm. From my backyard, I observed the horses. I eventually started to take equestrian lessons at the farm. Animals have always been a part of my life. But, my true passion is raising puppies.

Your proposals and pitches all had your thesis/pitch right up front. It was very concise and specific.

Specificity is one of the ideas I promote early on in the course that is essential when we get to this point. You want your proposal to do something specific. You want it to involve the specifics of how it will get done. You want an app or a book or a blog to do or discuss something specific.

    1. PAWS raises money for dog health research with dog walks and t-shirts.

    2. The Passion for PAWS website is filled with health info, product reviews, nutrition facts and recipes.

    3. The PAWS app lets owners access their pet’s veterinary health history.

These are all great specific ideas that can be easily started, but maybe a few too many at once.

Get one dog walk started and finished and maybe sell one t-shirt design the first time.

Or create the blog/website and give yourself some content goals. Write twelve articles by the end of the year and find three additional writers who would be willing to create more content. Then later you can work on an app design and/or getting a newsletter out to vet offices, etc.

By taking manageable concrete steps, you can show people you are capable and ready for more responsibility. The writing should reflect this. It should detail the initial specific goals and how and when they will be achieved.

Your presentation is good. Your visuals are well chosen and your personal story and voice kept it moving along quickly. It was structured and easy to understand. Again, my only criticism is you might be biting off more than you can chew to start. The proposal could be half as long and could just announce the walk.

Give a date. Where do people sign up? Who can participate? Where will it be? Do you need police help and a permit? Maybe you should write a flyer with instructions. Make it as simple as can be.

You might also want to concentrate on where the donations are going. Is this for doggie cancer? Doggie heart disease? The money raised will have to go somewhere specific. Talk to possible participants and vets. What type of research gets owners and walkers excited? What type gets the vets excited?

This is really a draft of your proposal. You are proposing your proposal. Your audience doesn’t want to hear that you propose a website and a t-shirt. It just wants to know the link and how much.

    Dog Walk.
    For Canine Cancer Research.
    Marmaduke Dog Run.
    8AM.
    Friday, April 20th.
    $50 Entry Fee
Matching t-shirts for you and your dog.
Search Passion PAWS on Facebook and Twitter.

It doesn't have to be that simple, but by thinking of reaching your audience with your message in this way, it helps elevate all of your writing to something purposeful. Like a good sign on an electrical pole downtown - you want to communicate. You want to catch eyes.

    Good work Capulet.
